A hundred
years ago this October three men and a woman convened the
first class ever for the Divinity School of the Pacific
Synod. They
believed it was important for church leaders to be shaped in
the same environment in which they would one day serve, so
they stepped out in faith to found their own seminary in the
west. It was in
the balcony of Saint James Lutheran Church in Portland,
Oregon.
The
fledgling seminary grew and was later moved to Seattle, where
it prospered until the Great Depression. Unable to withstand
the economic climate of the time, it closed. When it did, the
proceeds of the seminary property's sale were invested for the
future. "We need
a seminary in the west," they thought, "and when the time is
right, we'll have some money to resurrect this one."
Nearly
twenty years later, it happened. Another group of
faithful founders wanted to build a seminary in the west. They had found a
beautiful piece of property in the Berkeley hills, and needed
some money to buy it.
"You can have this money," the story goes, "if you name
your seminary Pacific Lutheran." It was an offer they
couldn't refuse, and Pacific Lutheran Theological Seminary was
reborn.
From life
to death to life.
That's the Easter story, and it's the story of Pacific
Lutheran Theological Seminary.
The
seminary lives because of the love and support it receives
from you. We are
grateful for all the goodness you have showed us, and we are
glad to be this month's designated ministry for Second Mile
Giving in the Sierra Pacific Synod. Your support gives us
new life every day.
Happy
Easter!

Synod
Assembly Registration Fees *IMPORTANT* Please note that your congregation is obligated
to register and pay for the same number of voting
members which was listed in the registration letter you
received from the Synod office. If you are entitled to
three voting members (one pastor, one female voting member and
one male voting member), you must pay the registration fee for
all three voting members, even if you are not sending your
full complement of voting members.
If you
are not sending the full number of voting members which has
been allotted to your congregation, register on line those who
are coming. Then send a check to the Synod office for
the amount owed for the voting member(s) who will not be
attending from your congregation.
This is
very important, since the costs for the Assembly are
"balanced" among the total number of voting members who are
expected to attend. Thank you.
