Easter Cross in Stained Glass

Sierra Pacific Synod, ELCA                                                                  April 15, 2010

Have you filled out your 2010 Census Form yet?sp; If you haven't, let me take this moment to encourage you to do so.  I ask because Debbi and I have, and I was given pause when it came to the question about my ancestry/ethnicity.  It gave me pause because I honestly don't know how I feel about this question, on a number of levels.

+ Personally.  As someone with Hispanic heritage, I'm not sure which box to check.  My grandmother, a descendant of the Vallejo family, is the person through whom I claim and celebrate my Hispanic heritage.  One of my siblings checks "Hispanic" when asked to on forms, the others don't.  I didn't, mostly because I am not fluent in Spanish, and don't believe myself to be predominantly of one culture or another.

+ Professionally.  As a pastor of the ELCA, I am keenly aware of the need for our churches to better reflect the diversity of the communities we are called to serve.  We are nowhere near the goals we aspired to reach in the formation of the ELCA for ethnic and cultural inclusiveness, at most of the levels of our ministry.  I am not sure my counting myself as Hispanic does justice to the work we have been called to do to be more inclusive, because I don't believe I am reflective of that goal having been realized in me.

+ Communally.  As a citizen of this country, I value a census being taken to help know how we can best be represented in government, and where that government can be represented in the services provided in the communities where we live.  But there is a part of me that wonders - what is the value of knowing the ethnicity of our citizenry?  Does asking this question deepen the divisions and tensions that already exist between people of different cultures, races and ethnicities, or does it help us to know and celebrate the rich diversity of peoples that make up our country?

I offer all of this to you because I believe there are no easy or quick answers to any of these questions.  I recently attended the Anti Racism Workshop that was offered by the Racial and Ethnic Ministries Working Group of our Synod.  It was a challenging weekend, and left me with more questions than answers about these and other questions, including my own understandings and feelings about racism in our country and our church.

At our upcoming Synod Assembly in Reno, our Keynote Speaker will be Dr. Victor Rodriguez, Chair of the Department of Chicano and Latino Studies, California State University, Long Beach, who will speak on the subject of "Cultural Racism, the Multicultural Church and the Anti-Racist Church."  He was one of the presenters at the workshop, and had a real impact on me.  I expect his presentations will be interesting and challenging for us to hear, and an opportunity to search our hearts, minds and journeys of faith for opportunities to live fully into the questions that are brought forward by census forms, goals for inclusiveness in our ministries, and our role as citizens in a diverse nation.

I encourage you to take the time to visit the synod website, if you have not already done so, to register for the assembly, download materials that will be needed if you are a voting member (and are available for anyone to read and review), and plan to be with us as we discern and discover what it means for us to be "Vital Congregations (in) Just Communities."

God's Peace,

Bp. Mark

SYNOD ASSEMBLY INFO & REMINDERS
  • Only $3 per night for Valet Parking at the Silver Legacy Resort?  You must be kidding!  Nope, when you get to the hotel you can either give your car keys to the valet as you take your bags to your room, or park your car yourself for the same price.  If you fly into Reno, the hotel shuttle bus will be there to pick you up and return you to the airport when you're ready to return home - all for the same $3 per night fee.  Compared to the Parking and Shuttle fees in most cities this is a real deal!
  • Some of our attendees believe they can save a few dollars by staying at other hotels a mile or two away from the host property.  By doing so, they don't help offset all of the many expenses related to putting on a Synod Assembly.  If we don't meet our contracted sleeping room commitment, it increases the synod's exposure to financial penalties.  In addition, staying at the Assembly hotel is more convenient and comes with "perks."  We encourage you to make your reservations as soon as possible: Hotel Reservations Link.
  • Workshop information is available at Workshops Info.  Start planning the workshops your team will attend!
  • Deadlines:  April 19 - Registration fees due; reduced rate hotel reservations close.  May 1 - Deadline for Issues of Conscience.
  • Requests for Assembly subsidies can no longer be considered.
  • Every congregation is asked to bring TEN DOZEN cookies or some other non-perishable, healthy alternative.
  • Bring your favorite coffee and water containers to be refilled at the refreshment area or in your room.
  • Thursday night dinner and Friday box lunch are included in your registration fee.  Guests must register for the meals to be included.
  • A monetary offering will be divided between local (Nevada released prisoner re-entry program) and international ministries (Lutheran World Relief for Haiti and Darfur, and Lutheran Malaria Relief).  Please encourage your congregation council to support these worthy ministries and send a check with you.
  • There will be a breakfast on Friday morning featuring Nevada Supreme Court Justice James Hardesty.  He will discuss the re-entry program noted above.  Tickets at $20 each; reservations must be made by May 4.  For a downloadable form go to www.loppca.org/.
  • An in-kind offering will be new, packaged socks, underwear and toiletries for hundreds of needy and homeless children K-12 in Washoe County, Nevada.
  • Onsite check-in will be at the Silver Legacy on the lower level.
  • A Green Assembly - there will be no information packets distributed; Assembly information is posted on the SPS website and ministries/ agencies will have information in the Display area.
  • Woven Image will present a concert on Friday night at 8:00.  A free will offering will be received that will help women in India to become more independent.
  • Please remember that the costs for the Assembly are "balanced" among the total number of voting members who are expected to attend; each congregation is obligated to register and pay for the same number of voting members which was listed in the registration letter you received from the Synod office.
