Last
Sunday, I was part a gathering of the people our synod elected
to serve as voting members at the coming Churchwide
Assembly. This was our second time together to share a
meal, become better acquainted, discuss what it means to be a
voting member (not a delegate) and consider all the issues
that will be before us. There was no "caucusing". No
straw-polls were taken. No one was asked (nor did anyone
offer) where they stood on these matters. It was simply
a time to build community with folks who will soon experience
what I'm told will be an enormously intense week of talking,
listening, worshiping, eating, praying , connecting, arguing,
and agreeing.
In
preparation for the assembly, we asked everyone to go to the
website and watch a video narrated by ELCA Secretary David
Swartling in which he lays out the responsibilities of the
voting members. (Click for video) As I watched and listened, something occurred to
me: This is a great list, not only for next week in
Minneapolis, but for living as God's people - forgiven,
redeemed, and called to be bearers of the Gospel ... in
Auberry, in Chico, in Fremont, in San Jose ... (you get the
picture)
So ... as we go, please keep us and all who will be
present in your prayers. Stay informed by checking in at
the ELCA website ELCA
Assembly. Watch the podcasts. Join us for worship
via cyberspace. And consider how our list of
"instructions" might also provide some personal guidance,
too.
- study carefully
- reflect prayerfully
- listen attentively
- consider judiciously
- elect thoughtfully
- participate faithfully in worship
- pray frequently for the guidance of the Holy Spirit
- act conscientiously for the sake of the unity of the
whole church

ELCA GLOBAL
MISSION SURVEY
A request from Bp. Mark
and Ray Hinders, Chair, Global Missions Advocacy Task
Force:
Please consider taking
the time to read this request from Global Missions of the ELCA
and complete the survey on the link provided in the letter
(below) from Pr. Lanny Westphal.
Greetings in the name of Jesus Christ, who calls us to
live for the sake of the world.
May I ask for your help in an important project?
The ELCA Global Mission unit is mapping the extent of ELCA
involvement in God's work around the world through the Global
Engagement Survey. The survey may be found at www.elca.org/globalsurvey.
Participants will receive information on resources to
enhance their global connections, as well as the survey's
results in the summer of 2010. Please note this survey
is intended for global engagement outside of the Companion
Synod Program. A new tool is under development to
facilitate communication regarding companion-synod
relationships and will be ready for use within a few
months.
In Christ's service with you,
Pr. Lanny Westphal
