This morning a letter went out by
"snail mail" to congregations, clergy and lay
leaders sharing exciting news as well
as updates
regarding our Sierra Pacific Synod and our transition process.
Because of its importance, I'm offering a bit of a summary in
this electronic venue as well.
First, our news: We are pleased to
announce that the Synod Council extended a call to Pr. Jim
Goldsmith to the position of Assistant to the Bishop/Director
for Mission Support, which Jim has accepted. Jim and his wife Karen
are in the midst of saying good-bye to their communities at
both Fortuna and Ferndale. Eventually Jim will be
housed in the Office of the Bishop, Fresno. He will spend half his
time working with Campus Ministry, Communication, and the
congregations, rostered leaders and their families in that
region of the synod.
The other half of his time will be focused primarily on
stewardship as he partners with Pr. Harvey Blomberg and the
Evangelical Outreach and Congregational Mission unit of the
ELCA. We are
excited about the gifts Jim brings to both parts of his call
and we ask your prayerful support for him and his family as
they move into this new call.
Second, our updates:
·
Witness
and Service team has approved a grant requested by the Synod
Council in order to fund the new position of Director of
Synodical Operations.
We will be posting that job in the near future, via
this e-newsletter, as well as on the website and through the
ELCA job posting site. The position will be based out of the
Sacramento Office of the Bishop and will have primary
responsibility for managing the 3 offices and support staff,
as well as providing financial oversight and projection for
our synod.
·
The "IT cloud" has arrived! A new server was
installed last week, and all of our various devices have been
brought on board and synchronized. Calendar sharing is in
process and remote access for staff to the documents on the
server is already up and working. Very
exciting!
·
Significant progress has been made
regarding the Offices of the Bishop for the Peninsula and
Fresno areas.
Unforeseen issues have arisen regarding the Office of
the Bishop/Sacramento.
Details of all these will be shared as soon as they are
finalized.
I thank you for your prayers, patience and
support as this transition unfolds. I recently read that
while we think we can move in a straight line from here to
there, it is ALWAYS a winding path. TOO
TRUE!
Praying Epiphany blessings of illumination on
the path,
Pr. Nancy

Associate

CANDIDATES FOR SYNOD VICE PRESIDENT
SOUGHT
In
May 2010 at the Synod Assembly in Reno, we will be electing a
new Vice President of the Synod. The constitution
requires that this person be a lay person who is a member of
an ELCA congregation. The VP typically chairs the Synod
Council meetings, serves on the Executive Committee and
provides other services as needed, when available. A
good working knowledge of both the synod and Roberts Rules of
Order would be helpful, as well as flexibility in
schedule.
Do you
know someone who you think would serve well in this
capacity? A few folks have already been identified, but
the Nominating Committee, in its process of offering two
names for the election, is seeking other possible
candidates. Do you know someone who fits? If so,
please encourage her/him to contact the office at info@spselca.org to
receive the brief questionnaire the Nominating Committee has
designed. February 4th is the deadline to receive those
completed questionnaires, so please don't delay. Thanks
for your help!
