Public Voices of Caring and Compassion
"Does
not wisdom call, and does not understanding raise her
voice? On the
heights, beside the way, at the crossroads she takes her
stand."
(Proverbs 8:1-2).
As
another long summer of state budget drama begins to unfold,
with its consequences for those who struggle to meet basic
needs or depend on a public safety net because of age or
disability, those who have brought their voices - and
frequently their tears - to the Capitol in recent weeks have
pleaded for Solomon-like wisdom from our elected leaders - the
"trinity" of the Senate, Assembly, and Administration - as
they grapple with deep recession and structural deficits. In "seeking and
speaking the truth in love" and "stepping forth as a public
church that witnesses boldly to God's love for all that God
has created," the Lutheran Office of Public Policy -
California (www.loppca.org) bears witness to suffering;
encourages policy solutions which minimize harm and protect
those in whom we recognize the face of Christ; practices
hospitality, accompaniment, and solidarity with those who are
hurting; and supports congregations and members in their own
witness.
Priorities
for 2010, guided by the LOPP Policy Council within the
framework of ELCA Social Statements and hunger guidelines,
include the state health and human services budget, climate
change, and budget and governance reform.
Churchwide support
comes from ELCA World Hunger, which provides for a ½ time
Director. Operating expenses are funded by synods in
California. Gratefully received
2nd Mile gifts enable LOPP to gain greater
visibility in the capital, through sponsorship and
participation in nonpartisan events, travel support for
Lutherans who bring their experience and expertise to
Sacramento, and hospitality at St. John's Lutheran Church for
groups with a common purpose (ENACT Nutrition and Physical
Activity Lobby Day in April, Immigrant Day in May; if you are
interested in joining us for Early Learning Lobby Day - urgent
given the proposed $1.2 billion cut in child care - or the
JERICHO Celebration on June 15, or Interfaith Power &
Light Lobby Day on climate change on June 23, please call or
email).
As
I flew today to another synod assembly in Southern California,
I pondered the biblical images of creation, and saw visible
signs of how we are linked together, by agriculture, water,
oil, transportation, the incarcerated, the free, and those who
serve in the military.
We are neighbors, called to care for each other and
creation with compassion and equity. Your voices are needed
and make a difference!
California needs us! Thanks for your
witness, your prayers, and your expressions of support.
God's
peace and grace,
Mark

ELCA WORLD HUNGER FUNDS AT WORK
Thanks to ELCA World Hunger, and a program
funded by an ELCA Domestic Hunger Grant, 1,500 children
from 16 schools in low income neighbor-hoods in Alameda
County, California come to school better able to concentrate
and eager to learn. Before the week-end,
students go home with child-friendly recipes and a bag of
nutritionally balanced foods to sustain them on days when they
do not benefit from subsidized school meal
programs.
