One week from today, the Synod Assembly
will begin in Fresno. I hope and pray that the long
hours spent by the planning committee, synod staff, and many
others in our synod will come to fruition in a time of prayer,
praise and thanksgiving for the blessing of having been called
by God to work in the vineyard that is central and northern
California and northern Nevada. Please remember in
prayer our keynote speakers, Pr. John Rutsindintwarne and Pr.
Walt Parry, our Bible Study Leader, Bishop Emeritus April
Ulring Larson, synod leadership, our gracious hosts from the
Fresno area, and those who will be travelling to serve as
voting members and visitors at the Assembly.
A special e-mail with important reminders and
information about the Assembly was sent to you earlier
today. For those who have served as voting members
before - welcome back - it will be good to see you
again! For those who have never served, I think you will
find this a great use of your time. My hope is that
those who are more familiar with how Synod Assemblies work
(pastors, lay rostered leaders, prior voting members) will
offer help and assistance to those who will be navigating the
work of being a voting member for the first time. Please
make sure that all of the voting members from your
congregation / ministry have access to the materials they will
need to bring with them, as well as any insights you can offer
that will be helpful to a first time attendee.
You know, helping people feel welcome and
prepared for a Synod Assembly isn't really all that much
different than the kind of welcome we would wish to offer
someone who visits our church for the first time - a warm
greeting, a friendly face, a kind word of explanation - look
for such opportunities to serve as we gather in Assembly, and
the blessings will abound! Hospitality - it's not just a
job - it's a calling! Let's work together to make this
the most "hospitable" Assembly we can possibly offer - all to
God's glory.
See you in a
week! Bp. Mark
