God is Using You

God is Using You

“I thank my God every time I remember you, constantly praying with joy in every one of my prayers for all of you, because of your sharing in the gospel . . . I am confident of this, that the one who began a good work among you will bring it to completion by the day of Jesus Christ.”  Philippians 1: 3 – 6

I’ve been serving as Assistant to the Bishop now for a little over a year and a half. I often hear the question, “What do you enjoy the most about your new call?” And I know exactly what my answer is: The people.

  • My wonderful colleagues on the Bishop’s Staff
  • Our incredible support staff
  • All of the fantastic pastors and the great congregations in our Synod
  • All of the synodical staff from Region 2 (Rocky Mountain Synod, Southwest Synod, Pacifica Synod and Grand Canyon Synod)

We’re all working in God’s kingdom together. We’re all sharing in the Gospel in our specific contexts with our (sometimes!) quirky and unique personalities. God is using all of us for God’s work in the world. And I get to see it all the time! And it is a joyful thing, to be sure. It fills me with gratitude.

I know. There are a lot of problems. The fires keep burning. The children still cry out for their parents. The poor are still hungry in our neighborhood and beyond. Couples still struggle in their marriages. People are still dealing with addictions.

And then there are the “smaller” problems: It’s difficult to run Confirmation programs because sports often get in the way. There are less people to help with Vacation Bible School – or you have decided not to hold it this summer. Budgets continue to be tight.

But here’s the thing: Remember, God is using you. God is working through your small congregation, or your mid-sized or your large congregation. God is using your ordinary, simple gifts and strengths to make a difference in people’s lives. You probably have no idea the impact you are having on people who you encounter each day.

Just trust. Trust that God is working through you and through your congregation. I see it every time I visit one of your churches.

And thank you. Thank you for your ministry – your sharing of the gospel. And know that God is smiling upon you and is well pleased with you.

In Christ’s Love,
Pr. Kathryn
