California Lutheran University is your university in Region 2. We are thankful to the congregations in the Sierra Pacific Synod and your support and partnership in this ministry.
Cal Lutheran welcomed its’ largest freshman class to date along with 250 transfer students. This year’s freshman class is more diverse than last year’s. More than one in three first-year students are the first in their families to go to college, and more than half are of ethnicities that are traditionally underrepresented on college campuses.
In terms of staff, the university welcomed Regina D. Biddings-Muro as the new vice president for university advancement at California Lutheran University She leads a team of about 30 people dedicated to fundraising and alumni relations. She takes over as the university works to finish raising funds for a science center, its largest fundraising campaign to date for a single building.
Hazel Salazar Davidson, in her role as campus minister, will work alongside Rev. Scott Maxwell-Doherty to provide pastoral care for the whole of the university, develop faith formation programs for students, participate in interfaith engagement, and help identify and meet student needs, especially among underrepresented students. From her Lutheran understanding of Word and Sacrament ministry, Hazel will reach out to multiple faith communities to communicate Cal Lutheran’s mission, identity and commitments. She joins the community having completed her Master of Divinity at Fuller Seminary in Pasadena and the TEEM program through Pacific Lutheran Theological Seminary, a graduate school of Cal Lutheran located in Berkeley.
The fall semester also marks the launch of two new programs, a bachelor’s degree in hospitality and tourism management which prepares students for a career in any public sector that involves hospitality, including but not limited to hotel administration, tourism, food service management and customer service. And a one year Master’s degree in Management, provides non-business majors with a convenient and effective way to acquire the skills they need to advance in their fields.
