A Message from California Lutheran University
by Kathye Hamm
California Lutheran University is pleased to be your Lutheran university in the West. We are a diverse scholarly community dedicated to excellence in the professional studies, liberal arts, and sciences. This year we have the largest undergraduate population within our history, enrolling 3,077 students in addition to the 1,225 students pursuing graduate degrees. U. S. News ranked Cal Lutheran as 9th among regional universities in the West, 3rd for Best Undergraduate Teaching, and 5th for Best Colleges for Veterans. Celebrate with us!
There is always something new being developed at Cal Lutheran, a sign of positive growth and momentum. Construction is underway to transform the Centrum Café into a Habit Burger Grill which our students are eagerly awaiting. A Math Center and Transfer Center, both funded by Federal Grants, are being developed to serve the needs of our students. At a time when the demand for science professionals is greater than ever, the new Swenson Science Center, opening in May, is being built to propel students into meaningful careers in research, healthcare, and business all doing work that will have a lasting impact on our world. To watch a camera on the construction in progress, visit https://science.callutheran.edu/. In our graduate programs, we have launched a program in cybersecurity to meet the growing demand for professionals who can safeguard an organization’s technology systems. An ethnic and race studies major is joining our undergraduate program so that students will gain a deeper understanding of communities of color in the United States and build cultural competence in working with diverse groups of people. Women’s Lacrosse has been added to the varsity sports program making it the 12th women’s team on campus.
We are thrilled to host the Western States Youth Gathering and the Western States Multicultural Youth Leadership Event http://wsyg.com/ next June bringing high school students from Regions 1-4 to our campus. Are you a leader in the church? Then come to Executive Skills for Church Leaders https://bit.ly/2mkB3Ez or Essential Skills for Youth Workers https://bit.ly/2lFr2BN both held on campus to equip leaders for their work in the church and world.
We are proud to be a partner with the Pacifica Synod and a member of the Network of ELCA Colleges and Universities. Our mission fuels our daily work as we educate leaders for a global society who are called and empowered to serve the neighbor so that all may flourish. Now, as never before, the world needs our graduates who are intellectually acute, humbly open to others, vocationally wise, morally astute, and religiously sensitive.
