Faith Lutheran Church of Castro Valley seeks a qualified person to provide musical leadership and creative vision to Faith’s dynamic music and worship ministries. Experience in choral directing, bell choir, organ, and piano performance and accompaniment is desired. Faith Lutheran has a II/34 Balcom & Vaughan pipe organ (stop list available,  a Yamaha C7 semi-concert grand piano and a four octave set of Malmark handbells. Full-time or part-time negotiable with compensation commensurate with applicant’s experience and skill set. The Music Director is a paid staff person under the direct supervision of the Pastor. Faith has a diverse and blended worship style that is rooted in Lutheran heritage and is based on Lutheran theology following the liturgical calendar.

Skills, Abilities and Requirements

Faith is committed to the ELCA  Lutheran Church and its teachings.

Knowledge and training in Church music.

Ability to read music.

Competent keyboard, vocal, and conducting ability.  This includes being able to conduct while playing.  Keyboard improvisation encouraged but not required. Music degree preferred but not required.

Ability to inspire the congregation to sing hymns, psalms and songs of liturgy.

Recruit and encourage participation of all people of all ages and abilities in various choirs and age levels.

Excellent organization and communication skills.

A self-starter with the ability to multi-task successfully.

Computer literacy required.

Work cooperatively with all members of the staff in team ministry, within Faith’s three Mission Areas.


Plan the worship services with the Pastor.  Select and purchase music as appropriate.  Provide music selections to the Parish Administrator in a timely manner. Knowledge of online resources a plus (e.g. Sundays & Seasons).

Assess the effectiveness of the worship services and provide recommendations for improvement.

Direct and rehearse by providing competent choral development with vocal instruction, education, and musicianship.

Recruit, train, and encourage volunteers for various choirs: Adult choir(s), Youth choir (7th-12th grade), Elementary choir (1st-6th grade), and bell choir.

Could potentially hire outside musicians for special services subject to pre-approval by the Pastor.

Collaborate with worship staff by being in regular contact with leaders of those groups.

Collaborate with Youth Ministry to develop Faith’s musical theatre tradition, including planning, financing, and execution of productions.

Maintain sound equipment or coordinate volunteer and professional sound technicians.

Provide for and schedule a competent substitute in the event of absence due to personal time off or emergency.  Notification of a substitute shall be made to the Pastor and Parish Administrator.


Prepare an annual budget for the music program and annual report of the year’s musical activities, acquisitions, and accomplishments.

Provide updates to the Congregation via the weekly Sunday bulletin and monthly newsletter articles on worship activities.

Responsible for adhering to and ensuring others under the Music Director’s supervision adhere to any and all copyright laws as they pertain to the music for Faith Lutheran Church.

Attend staff meetings, held once or twice a month, as well as Mission Leader and Directors meetings every other month.

Plan rehearsals and music for the church year well in advance.

Utilize Church bulletins, newsletters and community postings to recruit participation in the music programs.

Take advantage of Continuing Education opportunities.

Oversee maintenance of the music library, including the ordering of music.

Collaborate with other musical staff to plan choir social events – such as Christmas parties, end of year fellowship, and All Choir Sunday.

Work Schedule

The work schedule is dependent upon meeting the demands of the music ministry which will require time on Sundays and some evenings. Rehearsals historically have been on Wednesday evenings and Sunday mornings, but can be negotiated.

This position could require extra time during the summer, Christmas, Holy Week and Easter to plan and practice musical productions.
